AR Rahman Faces Online Backlash Over Qawwali Vibe In Ramayana Song

Ramayana will hit the cinemas on November 5.

AR Rahman has sparked a heated debate online over his new track, Mangal Rang, from director Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming mythological epic, Ramayana.

The song serves as the background score for the sacred wedding scenes of Lord Rama and Sita, featuring vocals by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal with lyrics by Kumar Vishwas.

However, soon after its release, listeners took to social media platforms to voice their strong disappointment. Many users pointed out prominent qawwali and Sufi influences in the musical arrangement.

Critics argued that such a style feels completely out of place for an ancient Indian epic. Several fans drew direct comparisons between Mangal Rang and Rahman's earlier works, such as Kun Faya Kun from Rockstar and tracks from Jodha Akbar.

They expressed that the team should have relied on classical instruments like the veena, sitar, and mridangam, alongside Sanskrit-heavy lyrics, to maintain the sacred atmosphere.

While some users questioned whether Rahman was the right choice for the historical project, others continue to defend his creative vision.

Ramayana will hit the cinemas on November 5.
