Making childhood dreams come true

Young director Ajay Bhoopathi talks about his debut film RX 100 and his admiration for Ram Gopal Varma.

The trailer of Ajay Bhoopathi’s directorial debut RX 100 is already creating quite a buzz. “I am getting offers from big production houses and even Tamil filmmakers,” says Ajay, who hails from Atreyapuram in East Godavari district.”

“I am the first person from my village to direct a film,” says Ajay proudly, even as he reveals his fascination for Ram Gopal Varma from his childhood days. “I always wanted to work with him one day. I watched Kshanam Kshanam many times and liked it even more than Shiva,” shares Ajay, who moved to Hyderabad after his degree.

“I didn’t know anyone when I started off,” says Ajay, who got his first break with Ride as an assistant director. He then worked with for Doosukeltha following which he joined RGV. “I met RGV through a common friend and worked with him for a few films like Killing Veerappan, Vangaveeti and Attack. I learnt a lot from him,” says Ajay, who admits that he got the idea for RX 100 when he was working with RGV.

After several missed opportunities, the youngster finally approached Karthikeya, a newcomer. “I liked his body structure and he fit the character in the film. It’s an emotional dark love story,” says Ajay about his film, which was mostly shot outdoors in his village, Atreyapuram.

He adds, “I don’t watch many English or Hindi films, but I observe my surroundings, people and places a lot and believe that stories should be natural. RX 100 is on similar lines.”

Admitting that it was not easy to get permission from the bike company for the title, he narrates, “We contacted the bike company in Hyderabad and Chennai for many days and finally wrote to the head office in Japan. Only after many months, they finally agreed.”

Ajay also reveals that he found his life partner during the shooting of the film.

“I am getting married on August 25. It’s a love marriage accepted by both families. She is also from my village.”
