I am influenced by works of Mani Ratnam, says Hanu Raghavapudi

New-age director Hanu Raghavapudi, who is basking in the success of ‘Sita Ramam’, is not in a hurry to announce his next and would prefer to finish the script first. The director who made love stories like ‘Krishnagadi Veera Prema Gadha’ and spy thriller ‘Lie’ loves to explore different genres.

He claims to be a great admirer of legendary Tamil director Mani Ratnam and also adores movies of Rajkumar Hirani. He talks about his future plans with Deccan Chronicle.

Q: After the huge success of ‘Sita Ramam’, you haven’t announced your next film yet. Why?

A: Honestly, I have been facing a lot of pressure from various quarters to commence my new film, but I am not falling into any kind of temptation. I strongly believe that a good story is the key, otherwise I would have to feel sorry later. So I am taking time to weave an interesting story before announcing my next film. Also, I am not in any race and like to work in my own space and time.

Q: You have introduced B-town diva Mrunal Thakur in Telugu with Sita Ramam and previously Lavanya Tripathi and Mehreen Pirzada. Didn't you find any suitable Telugu girl?

A: I was looking for a gorgeous looking girl who is also a good performer. So I found Mrunal Thakur perfect for the role in 'Sita Ramam'. She matched strides with ace performer Dulquer Salmaan and proved my choice right with a sterling performance. Earlier, I roped in non-Telugu girls like Lavanya Tripathi and Mehreen Pirzada for ‘Andala Rakshasi’ and ‘Krishnagadi Veera Prema Gaadha’ respectively. Frankly, I have nothing against Telugu girls per se. I am very happy that Telugu-speaking girl Sreeleela is making waves in Tollywood.

Q: Your love stories seem to be influenced by Mani Ratnam movies. Aren't they?

A: I can’t deny the fact that I am influenced by ace director Mani Ratnam in more ways than one. There is a vast difference between being influenced by some eminent film or book, but lifting scenes which is a disgusting act. Of course, I love his unique plots, character arcs, breath-taking visuals and soulful music in his movies.

Similarly, I also adore the works of Bollywood filmmaker Raju Hirani who mesmerized viewers with ‘3 Idiots' and ‘PK’. Above all, legendary Satyajit Ray's work also fascinated me since they are relevant even today.

Q: Will you rope in a big star for your next film? And what about your Bollywood plans?

A: It is too early to talk about casting. It will be decided only on the completion of my script. Of course, working with stars like Nani and Dulquer has been a pleasant experience for me.

My new film may begin next year. So we have a lot of time to decide about it. I would love to make a mainstream Hindi film. I have also received a few offers from Bollywood. I would surely step into Bollywood because it's a dream for any young director.
