We will wait for the theatres to reopen': Vijay Kumar

Vijay Kumar rules out releasing Oreyi Bujjiga on OTT channels

The film Oreyi Bujji was supposed to hit the screens on March 25, but because of the lockdown, this didn’t happen. There is news that the film is being sought by an OTT channel for direct release.

“But we want to wait till the lockdown lifts and theatres open,” said Vijay Kumar Konda, the director of the film. When it was pointed out that theatres may not be allowed to reopen for a long while, he asserted that he still wants to wait. “We worked nearly a year for the film and we can wait for some more time for the release. We want to release our film in theatres only,” he said firmly.

The director has signed Nikhil, the grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, for his next. “It’s a sports film and there is action too,” he said. Nikhil got married on April 17. Vijay Kumar said even if there had been no lockdown, Nikhil would have had to take a break for his wedding. Now that he’s married, “once the lockdown is lifted, we can go directly for the shoot,” he pointed out.

Talking about the film, he said it has a baseball backdrop. Responding to a comment that the game isn’t very popular in India, he said,

“Most of the other sports have been covered in other films recently, so we wanted to make baseball the backdrop of this one. It will definitely give something fresh for the audience.”

Vijay Kumar is utilising the lockdown period creatively. “I am writing my own scripts,” he says. Is he thinking of doing a web series in the future? “I am concentrating on films”, the director said, adding, “no one has approached me yet for any web series.”
