Rajinikanth's 2.0 mired in complications

It was touted to be a path-breaking movie. But Rajinikanth's upcoming 3D film, 2.0, is still trying to find its way out of a series of problems.

Rajinikanth’s upcoming 2.0 seems to be drowning in problems. Producers of the film, directed by Shankar, are now facing a budget crisis. The problems started when the film’s budget overshot by a staggering amount.

“Originally, 2.0’s budget was Rs 65 crore. But keeping the special effects in mind, they increased it to Rs 90 crore. But the film is now costing Rs 160 crore, an amount that would be impossible to recover,” says a source close to the project.

Poor preparation for 3D filming is to be blamed for the fiasco. “They simply shot with expensive cameras and crew without doing their homework. Then they sent the film for post-production to an American FX company, which messed it up completely. Precious resources and time was lost. It had to be done all over again, pushing the budget to Rs 160 crore,” says the source.

The producers are now in a fix.“Rajinikanth is God-like in the South. But he doesn’t have a market in the North. The producers are hoping to get Akshay Kumar to promote the film in the Hindi belt. But as Akshay plays the antagonist in the film, it may not go down too well with his fans. But for all of this to be considered, the film first needs to be completed. And that doesn’t seem to be a possibility,” says the source.
