People feel a woman can't handle a unit, says B Jaya
B. Jaya is excited about her upcoming release Vaisakham. “It took time to complete when compared to my earlier films. This is also a high budget film,” says the director adding,“The story took time. Though it’s a love story, I have included so many emotions in it, and had to work on the screenplay to narrate it with clarity.”
Jaya shares that she narrated the story to every artiste in her film. “I conducted a workshop for the lead pair for a few weeks before the shooting started. After explaining a particular scene, I asked them to perform on their own initially and then gave suggestions,” she says, while showering praise on actress Avantika. “Most of the actors are senior, so I gave her thorough training and she did well,” says Jaya.
Interestingly, Jaya is one of the few women directors in the Telugu film industry. “Not just for a woman, it is very difficult for anyone to complete a film these days. Of course, people cannot believe that a woman can handle hundreds of people and complete a film in time,” she says, talking about why women directors are not able to enter the film industry.
As for Taapsee’s comments on the South Indian film industry, she says that it went out of proportion. “I know Taapsee very well and have seen the video. They just wanted a fun conversation. Even they wouldn’t have expected that it would go the other way,” says Jaya, adding that her intention was not to criticise the director or the industry.
