I will enter politics after five years: Varalakshmi

In town to promote her films, the actress opens up about her roles, relationships and recognition.

Actress Varalakshmi, the daughter of Sarath Kumar, is a well-known face in Tamil cinema. Now, her recent film Pandem Kodi 2, in which she plays a negative role, has received rave reviews. Next, she will be seen opposite Vijay in the upcoming film Sarkar. Coincidently, in both these films Keerthy Suresh is the other female lead. “Though we have acted in these two films, we don’t have scenes together and we want to work together in the future,” says Varalakshmi.

Though she has acted in 22 films until now, the actress says, it is her role as Bhavani in Pandem Kodi 2 that has given her prominence. “Now, I am playing a politician in Sarkar and it’s a challenging role. We have discussed the value of votes in the film,” shares the actress. Talking about politics and her interest in it, she says, “I would like to serve people and help them, so I want to enter politics after five years.”

The actress says that she knows Telugu and has dubbed for her characters in these two films. “It is always good to dub for your own character because only then the emotions feel real and it takes you closer to the audience,” says Varalakshmi. Her father Sarath Kumar is one of the most popular actors in Telugu cinema, but Varalakshmi didn’t want to be known merely as his daughter. “I didn’t act with my father, but now I have signed a film with him. I don’t want people to call me Sarath Kumar’s daughter all life long,” she says.

She believes that the #MeToo campaign is good, but it should be taken forward correctly. Talking about Vishal, she says, “He is a good friend and we discuss many things, but there is no love or marriage between us.”
