Business of birth
Ulrika Krishnamurti always considered herself as a theatre artist at heart. No wonder then that her politically-charged new play Made in India, presented in the UK by Tamasha and The Belgrade Theatre in association with Pilot Theatre is being well received. “I am thrilled to be a part of this project that gives a voice to all the different parties in this controversial debate about commercial surrogacy,” says Ulrika, who recently performed a one-woman show Echoes Within Walls and played the lead in Aparna Malladi’s indie feature The Anushree Experiments.
The play, Made in India, tours the UK from January through April 2017.
“Set in a surrogacy clinic in India, it is the story of three women — Londoner Eva, fighting for her last chance at motherhood, village girl Aditi for whom surrogacy is a lifeline out of poverty, and clinic owner Dr Gupta for whom this is all just business. In terms of the controversy surrounding commercial surrogacy, the play doesn’t pose itself as pro-ban or pro-choice, but I think it gives an important voice to the different parties in the debate,” she adds. Ulrika’s mother Dr Kiran Krishnamurti is more excited than her, Kiran says, “I am very happy that Ulrika is living her dream. She’s very passionate about her work and has trained hard. That combination for me spells a winner all the way. My heart swelled with pride when I watched her perform in her earlier play in London and I am sure it’s going to be the same this time.”
