Kairali, Sree theatres open food outlets
KOZHIKODE: When multiples are charging exorbitantly at their food courts, the state-run Kairali and Sree theatres here have opened an outlet offering quality food at reasonable prices. A Pradeep Kumar inaugurated the 'hi-tech refreshment cum food court' in the complex on Sunday. They have also decided to give an opportunity for one of the Kudumbashree units in the city to start their cafeteria here offering tasty, delicious and authentic Malabari snacks. “During the recent assembly discussions, food minister P. Thilothaman pointed out huge price surge in eateries of multiplexes, especially five in Malabar,” the legislator told DC.
"This is a grave state, and we must take action against it. The government run theatre would ensure food at very reasonable prices." Cinemas in Malabar that received notices for overcharging include Crown Theater and film city in Kozhikode, Padma Theatre in Malappuram, Vismaya at Perinthalmanna and Vinayaka at Kanhangad. These multiplexes sell food items at 30 to 50 percent higher than the maximum retail price or MRP. "Prices bakery items, soft drinks and sweet corn are almost triple than the prices outside,” said Ajith Unni, a city resident.
"If an aloo samosa in an ordinary hotel costs Rs 10, it is as high as Rs 40 to Rs 50 in multiplexes. A 300 ml soft drink may cost Rs 15 outside, but it can leave one poorer by Rs 25 to Rs 75 here. Moreover, theatres refuse to allow patrons to take food, and in some cases even water, inside. Mineral water is sold at double its MRP."
