Global movie weekend

The inaugural film pays tribute to the auteur from Iranian cinema Abbas Kiarostami with his magnum opus Taste of Cherry.

Films from around the world will be screened in Aluva for two days. The 10th International Film Festival of Janachithra Film Society has all the reasons to spoil you for choice with a handpicked bunch of internationally acclaimed movies. The festival is organised in association with Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and Federation of Film Societies of India on the coming Saturday and Sunday.

The inaugural film pays tribute to the auteur from Iranian cinema Abbas Kiarostami with his magnum opus Taste of Cherry. The film known for its minimalist approach has the protagonist in search of someone who can bury his body once he finishes himself. It went on to win Palme d’Or at the Cannes in 1997.

Other highlights of the fest are Ethiopian movie Difret and Second Mother from Brazil. Difret is an attempt to yank the veil of female oppression. The film points towards how the anti-women sentiments are worked out in the guise of social traditions. The Second Mother places a mother-daughter duo in the lead, through which it unveils the world of subservience and freedom.

On Day 1, films Sweet Bean, Court and Visaranai will also be screened in addition to Taste of Cherry and Difret.

Second Mother, The Club, Rams, The Lobster and Embrace of the Serpent are scheduled for Sunday. The venue is Jeevas Kendram in Aluva.
