New York: DC Studios hosted its grand world premiere of the much-anticipated film “Supergirl” at the Plaza at 300 Ashland on June 22, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York. The event was star-studded with the whole House of El, including the actors who play the roles of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. The stars of the evening were Milly Alcock, who plays Kara Zor-EL, David Cornswet, who is the older boy scout brother of Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the fearless Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the villain Lex Luthor. James Gunn and Craig Gillespie, the producer and director of the film, shared their new perspectives on Kara Zor-El.
Milly Alcock wore Balenciaga from head to toe with matching opera gloves, Rachel and David were wearing custom Ralph Lauren outfits, and Nicholas Hoult wore a tailored suit by Saint Laurent.
According to the reports from Deadline, the budget of the movie is $175 million, not taking marketing and other expenses into account. The film’s estimated target for break-even is $315 million. Even though the budget is lower compared to the Superman film that came last year, the anticipation is still very much higher due to many reasons.
The makers of the film were extremely strategic with launching Supergirl in the final moments of Superman (2025), where she crashes into the Fortress of Solitude looking for her dog Krypto. She was a breath of fresh air in the film with her carefree attitude, contrasting with his brother. Fans are also excited to watch Milly Alcock, who starred in the HBO hit series “House of the Dragon”. The DCU is heading into a new direction with James Gunn’s vision followed by Zack Snyder’s run. Supergirl is a huge scope for the newly budding Gunn’s DCU franchise with many films in pre-production. The star of the show is the absolute fan favourite ‘Krypto’ and its relationship with Kara.
James Gunn’s vision of the film gives it more scope to be a “stand-alone” rather than co-dependent on Superman. In an interview with AP, the director revealed what James Gunn had said to him in the beginning: “This is your version; I am approaching all of these films like they are their own graphic novels, and every graphic novel has its own illustrator and its own writer that makes it distinctive.”
The evolution of the Supergirl character is what makes this version strong and comic book accurate. Starting from Helen Slater’s stand alone feature film released in 1984 which portrayed her as charming, endearing, girl next door and innocent, then the Ruthless version of Kara in the C.W hit series Smallville who was more powerful than Clark, to the much more nuanced version of the 2015 C.W series “Supergirl” which explored Kara as a superhero with unwavering optimism, deep empathy and dedication to protect others. Variety has written an article which said: “SuperGirl Woman of Tomorrow, from Tom King’s 2021-22 comic book version, would be punk rock; she would not be squeaky clean like other super girls”.
Milley Alcock said in an interview with Auto Straddle that her version seems to live outside of what is “expected” from female characters while talking about the possibility of Kara being a queer character. In another interview with the channel Pay or Wait, she described Kara as messy, headstrong and grounded in trauma. She said, “When you think of a hero, you think of perfection, but Kara is fundamentally flawed and traumatized”.
The star cast and the makers of the film shared their thoughts in an interview with AP at yesterday’s premiere. James Gunn said, “It is a great opportunity to bring a great graphic novel to life; we found the right writer, director and stars”. Milley Alcock added that “She has a lot of grit, a lot of compassion, and she is beautifully tough” while talking about Kara. Craig Gillespie said, “It always comes down to script for me, and in the era of the beautiful complicated character of Supergirl who is flawed, complex, emotionally available but dealing with trauma, to be able to get that on screen is what I was most excited about, ” he concluded finally.
