Warning: Spoiler Alert
It’s back! The most awaited series of this year, 'The Last of Us', is back with another season. The show’s first season was splendid, leaving everyone shocked that one of the best series of 2023 was a video game adaptation.
The game’s story followed a fungus-based zombie pandemic, which led the world into shambles. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a man stricken with grief after losing his 14-year-old daughter 20 years ago at the start of the pandemic, travels from Massachusetts to Wyoming with Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who is also 14 at the start of their journey. Ellie is one of the keys to overcoming this pandemic as she is one of the very few immune to this fungal outbreak. However, in season one, we see that she is also the key to Joel overcoming his long mourning. After realising that Ellie would die on the operating table to help find a cure, Joel murders 18 Fireflies and one doctor to save an unconscious Ellie and takes her to the walled city of Jackson, where Tommy, Joel’s brother, lives. Happily Ever After, right?
Not exactly.
Time has progressed, and Ellie is 19. She still lives in a post-apocalyptic world where the struggle for survival is constantly looming over them. She has been distant from Joel after discovering the truth about the operation. But she is yet to meet the biggest loss of her life.
The most awaited arrival in Season 2 is Abby. Abby is the daughter of the doctor Joel killed. After her father was killed, Abby moved to Seattle with her friends, trained as a soldier, and made it her mission to get Joel and kill him. Abby and her former Fireflies friends go to Jackson to find Joel. Here’s where things get messy. Abby eventually finds Joel and kills him. This brutal end of Season one’s protagonist has not come easily for the audience who loved Joel and all he did for his adopted daughter Ellie.
Hold on! Don’t give up on the show yet! This begins the cycle of bloody vengeance between Ellie and Abby. The show delivered one of the biggest twists written in video game history. Seeing our main character dying is certainly upsetting, and it has been controversial. But this is not the moment to give up, the show moves on with Ellie and Abby as the deuteragonists, and you have to stay tuned for the progress between the two and the unwrapping of an ending that asks us to think about how all our actions have consequences.
