Spoorthy Gowda: Volleying for a serial debut

This national volleyball player debuts in Tulsi Dala and shares her telly tale so far...

A sporting talent right from her schooling days, she went on to represent Karnataka at the national level in both volleyball and javelin games. She even plays shuttle and kabaddi amongst her other favourite sports. Meanwhile, she even pursued her studies, graduating with an engineering degree in computer science followed with a lucrative job offer during the campus selection. However, Spoorthy Gowda ended up choosing one of her childhood dreams, which was to act. The budding actress speaks with Bengaluru Chronicle, on how she eventually chose a different path from sports, working in an IT company to acting, and more.

“I started with reality shows which earned me recognition for my sportive attitude. It was during my engineering days when I first ventured into one of the reality shows — Super Minute, wherein a special episode was dedicated for the college students. I won the game, and later another reality show Champion followed wherein I did my best. The third reality show was Super Kabaddi. I had no idea about acting and I was already selected for a job just before the last semester of my engineering course. When I almost accepted it, I witnessed a pleasant twist in my life,” says Spoorthy Gowda.

The sportswoman turned actress plays Sri Vidya in Tulsi Dala tele-serial, which she says is a complete contrast to her in real life. “The character I play in Tulsi Dala is a contrast to what I am in real life. As an adventure lover and sports being my passion, I usually go on a long bike ride, car racing, go-karting and so on but whereas Sri Vidya is a village girl who is soft by nature,” she smiles.

She further reveals that while she was studying in her fourth standard, she did take up few acting lessons for a brief period but her parents later got it discontinued with the fear that she might end up choosing acting as her profession as she grows up. “That apart, I had no experience as an actor. After I got through the audition, I started learning the art with the help of my co-artistes and the technicians. Each and everyone was like a University for me to learn the act. Moreover, the thirst in me to learn new things helped me too. Initially, there were days when I would take more than nine to 10 takes, and later the confidence helped me to better myself,” she adds.

Spoorthy does not regret choosing acting over a lucrative job in the IT industry. She has the confidence that she can always find work if she fails in the acting profession. “Even my parents expressed faith in my choice and my present aim to work hard and to get recognised as a good performer and not just as an actress,” she signs off.
