Old ‘Title’ in a new ‘Serial’

Inspired by Bollywood films using retro films, Kannada soaps too are now resorting to the same formula.

Repeating of super hit and classic movie titles in a brand new avatar has been the trend for quite some time. However, televisions had kept away from such practices for various reasons especially with regards to popular television soaps. But now, as a handful of brand new serials are making a ‘comeback’.

Confused with new serials coming back? Well, the new serials are being titled after popular tele-serials from the past. On Zee Kannada, both Radha Kalyana and Jothe Jotheyali, which were one of the most popular television soaps, are set to return in a brand new avatar. Recently, the new sitcom from past, Silli Lalli is also making a brand new comeback, which will go on air from this Saturday. Papa Pandu, another sitcom with a similar come back, is already a hit on the Kannada small screen. Bengaluru Chronicle reports.

Director Shekar says that such a trend existed only in the film industry and no similar experiments were happening on the small screen. “Recently classic and an all time super hit movies such as Nanjundi Kalyana, Thayige Thakka Maga and many such movie titles were reused for a completely different subject. The brand new ones were neither the sequels nor had any connection to the classic ones apart from the titles. The audience always recollect the titles of super hit movies, and the producer makes such attempts to cash-in on such experiments. For instance, if another Hindi movie is made with the title, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, there will always be some curiosity around it. It is the same case being repeated on small screen now,” he adds.

In respect to reality shows, the term seasons makes sense, and they do not suffer from identity crisis, feels another director Naveen. “Even if a reality show is missing in action for few years, they can always refer it as next season while it is a case of identity for serials. Though the new brands which are debuting with old titles, the audience will be hoping for something similar to what they had watched in the past. It is like the name of a person. A person can undergo any kind of makeover, but when he or she chooses to retain their names, they are obviously remembered for what they were in the past,” he explains.

Krishna, a film writer, concludes by saying that with social media coming into account, a lot of popular serials from the past are being discussed and viewed constantly. “In order to cash-in on such popularity, the channels are pushing for new serials with old titles. The audience will be curious to some extent but finally the product matters,” he says.
