Much ado about first love

Television star Kavitha Gowda talks about her latest soap, how she faced depression while playing a negative role on TV and more.

The actress became hugely popular after portraying the character of ‘Chinnu’ in her TV debut serial Lakshmi Baramma. The actress has now ventured into Kannada movies with Srinivasa Kalyana followed by First Love. A classical dancer turned actress — Kavitha Gowda— has been in the news over her second Kannada film as she was accused of non-cooperation during its release. She is now all set to shine as Vidya in her latest Kannada TV venture Vidya Vinayaka. But she strongly refutes claims about this soap being her comeback venture.

“Vidya Vinayaka is is certainly not my comeback venture, as I have been busy working ever since Lakshmi Baramma. Later, I shifted towards films and in between, I worked in a couple of TV soaps in Telugu and Tamil. I am just doing my job as an actor. However, following the recent episode where I was wrongly accused of non-cooperating during the release of my second film, I was in two minds whether to return to do work in the Kannada industry. Meanwhile, I kept getting calls to work here. However, the rumours surrounding First Love were still kept alive for reasons best known to its filmmakers, I was deeply hurt and was really scared to come back to work in Kannada,” says Kavitha.

She further adds that it was only after the producer Dileep Raj requested her to work in Vidya Vinayaka, she took a call to return. “They insisted that I play Vidya’s role and even waited for me. Later when the channel called me, I decided to take it up for the sake of all the unconditional love and affection showered upon me by my well-wishers who still know me as Chinnu. I feel very lucky about it and even back in the Tamil industry, I am known for my negative role as Rekha in Neeli.”

While she plays a modern girl in Vidya Vinayaka, who is caring, smart and chirpy, she talks about her negative role Neeli led to her sinking into depression.
“I always wanted to do a negative character and have admired the artistes playing such roles. Eventually it turned out to become the greatest challenge in my career, as it requires a lot of mental strength to carry it throughout the serial’s journey. I would get upset very soon if something went wrong. The negative energy starts playing on one’s mind even in real life. It affected me too and after such experiences, I feel bad for all those who portray similar such roles,” Kavitha reveals.

As far as the controversy surrounding First Love is concerned, Kavitha says she has all the proof and the team has not even made an attempt to talk to her. “Even during the release of Srinivasa Kalyana, I was not present on a few occasions, and during the release of First Love, I was abroad working. Despite such genuine reasons, they made it into a big issue,” she adds.
