Leaving us in splits
Cyrus Broacha of Bakra and podcast Cyrus Says fame has been on our television sets since, well, since almost forever. His witticisms and silly humour have made him synonymous with comedy and The Week That Wasn’t has only strengthened his position.
When asked about his performance today, Cyrus says, “I’m here for just a bit. I think the organisers plan to drop me at the mall, and then take me back to the airport! I, unfortunately, won’t be able to see much.” He goes on to say, “Since the show is in a mall and there’s going to be a family audience, I’ll probably have to alter my act a bit. Of course, there’ll be some double entendres and nervous laughter.”
One of the original funnymen of television who are still making a mark in the medium, he’s noticed a huge shift in the comedy scenario. “There are so many comedians now, in fact, I think there’s too many. If I’m out with family or friends, there’ll always be a person who comes up to me and tells me they want to be a VJ — and I’m just praying they don’t perform a bit for me. I’ve also noticed that all the comedians are ugly. Why don’t you go work on radio and leave the audiences alone!” he laughs adding, “Even in terms of content, sexual humour used to be a complete no-no. Now the audiences ask for it. They’ve grown very quickly. In terms of comedy, the south is up there; the audience here spoils me.”
When asked about any recent developments with his satirical news show, he says, “The Week That Wasn’t is going to be in a daily format from now on, so I’m going to be stuck with that for a while.” He concludes saying, “Don’t work hard and be happy, is what I live by, because I’m really lazy. For younger comedians, I just want to say, don’t be proud and take what you get. I’m performing in a mall today; it could be the circus next!” We’re all for it!
(Cyrus will be performing at Phoenix MarketCity today at 5 pm)
