Designs on the TV screen

She landed up in Bengaluru with the intention of studying fashion designing, but ended up becoming a TV star.

In spite of an abundance of talent from North Karnataka region, not many make it to the world of glamour and fame. In a rarity, this actress who landed in namma ooru to pursue her interest in fashion designing eventually landed up with a role in television.

Apeksha Purohit, who plays the popular ‘vamp’ role in Star Suvarna’s Triveni Sangama, is busy these days on the big screens too with three back-to- back Kannada films including T N Seetharam’s Kafi Thota where she plays the role of a cop. She speaks to Bengaluru Chronicle, about her love for fashion designing, TV, cinemas and more.

“Though I admired movie stars since my childhood I was never serious about becoming an actress. At best, I would imitate their acts in front of the mirror when I was alone. After my graduation in BBM at Bagalkote, I came to Bengaluru to study and pursue my interest in fashion designing. I was also a passionate dancer and during the shows, I would perform dance too. This is where the actual twist occurred in my life,” says Apeksha Purohit.

Impressed by her dancing skills, one of the small screen directors Prithviraj Kulkarni, offered her a role but the actress reveals that she was initially hesitant because of restrictions back home. “However, I managed to convince my parents after I realised that I should give it a try as the plot was good. I also felt that working in a new industry would boost my confidence. Smt. Bhagyalakshmi was my first TV serial and thereafter I was lucky to get recognition and went onto act in Kannada films,” she says.

At present, Apeksha has three films up for release — Kafi Thota, Kinaare, and Kaanada Kadalali. In Kafi Thota, she plays the role of a cop and whereas in Kinaare she is a doctor and in Kaanada Kadalali she plays a typical Kundar village girl

“I feel lucky to have worked under the veteran director T N Seetharam sir and also gaining experience while working with senior artistes in the film. I had actually turned down several TV serials as I was busy with Kannada films but when I heard the subject of Triveni Sangama, I took it up as a challenge. All these days, I was known for my emotional characters, but in Triveni Sangama I play the role of a vamp which is the complete opposite to what I have been portraying so far on the small screen,” Apeksha adds.

About talents from North Karnataka, the actress feels that despite many deserving ones, only a few make it to the industry. “For me, the opportunity came knocking on my door but for those who are eager to make their entry, they do not know whom to approach. Also they do not have the right contacts and this is why not many reach their destination. Some even become victims when they interact with the wrong people.”

Before signing off, the actress says that she likes her profession but is also interested in fashion designing. “In fact, I have designed my costumes in the serial. I also have interests in social services, and whenever I get time, I do my bit by helping the needy,” she concludes.
