Glad to play the baddie

Mridhula Vijay, who has been playing the do-gooder protagonist in Krishnathulasi.

Among the clichés that visit families every evening in the name of TV serials, Krishnathulasi has always stood out for its heart-warming tale of two sisters. It was loved for its more natural depiction of characters. Mridhula Vijay, who plays one of the central characters, Krishna, won hearts of the viewers for her portrayal of a simple and grounded woman.

Everybody loves Krishna, but today, Mridhula is preparing to appear on screen donning a negative side of the lovable Krishna.

“Krishna was this very kind person. She is now on the revenge mode after putting up with all those people who have troubled her in life,” says Mridhula. Asked about the transformation and how confident she feels about pulling it off, she says, “For me, taking on the role of such a good-hearted person was the biggest challenge. Had I started off with a negative character, it would have been easy. Initially, when the shooting for this serial started, it took me two days to get under the skin of Krishna as she is a very good person. So I have been portraying the do-gooder Krishna for the past 7-8 months and now, she is turning negative. But then I have a huge backing from my director who keeps on guiding me which made it easier to pull off the negative shade. I was comfortable.”

So is Mridhula more inclined towards portraying negative roles? “No, not exactly negative. I prefer bold characters.”

Before Krishnathulasi happened to her, Mridhula was part of a film. “I have been part of Krishnathulasi for the past one year. Signing up for this serial was a turning point in my career. I have done a movie and the serial Kalyanasaugandhikam before joining Krishnathulasi team.”

So, has she bagged any new projects? “As of now, I am concentrating on this and so, have not signed any new projects.”

She aims at working with the film industry one day. Quizzed about the satisfaction level of working with the small screen, she says, “It is true that serials play a big role in reaching out to the audience on a daily basis. But I have not segregated these two industries as they both give importance to acting. Moreover, my family has been associated with the film industry. So naturally, I am looking forward to working in movies.”
