Info' tainment: Television is no more than just an idiot box

Regional channels have realised the importance of exposing viewers to intelligent shows and programmes.

Television is no more than just an idiot box which is usually accused of making the viewers a couch potato. With more meaningful programmes and dedicated channels, making its foray into the small screen, the regional channels too have started to realise the need to be more than just a face of entertainment as the intelligent audience needs more than the usual dramas.

That’s why two new regional channels that are dedicated to infotainment — Saral Jeevana and Ayush TV have been launched. News channels including DD Chandana (which has special programmes for farmers, students), and Zee Kannada (which has Family doctor) have changed regional channels are perceived, reports Bengaluru Chronicle.

“Realising the importance of health which has been a great challenge in modern times, Zee Kannada has come up with a unique programme about health. “Expert doctors from the various fields will take part in a unique talk show anchored by senior TV personality Shylaja Santosha. It is different from just speaking to doctors on a panel. It will be an interactive programme which will allow the audience to seek advice on common ailments in a simple manner,” says Raghavendra Hunsur, the head of the Zee Kannada.

Meanwhile, the first Lifestyle channel — Ayush aim to relive the 7000 year-old legacy of ayurveda (which has been neglected now, due to advancements in medical sciences). It aims to utilise the untapped potential of Ayurvedic produce. “The Vedic scriptures, including Ayurveda, have always been concerned with the whole of humanity and not just restricted to India. To relive the legacy, provide more insights on the holistic approach of healing and for the betterment of society we have started AYUSH TV,” says M Harikrishna, MD of Ayush TV.

Even Real Star Upendra who sensed the need to create awareness for the viewers beyond providing the usual entertainment, has taken the role as the ambassador of Ayush TV. Whereas Saral Jeevan telecasts non-fiction programming with a focus on mythology, history, and insights from Indian heritage and culture. “With the objective of highlighting our Indian value system and exposing the present generation to the importance of our cultural practices, Saral Jeevan’s content consists of mythology, ayurveda, yoga, vastu and more” states the Saral Jeevana channel.
