There is no doubt that Tamil star Siva Karthikeyan’s last outing Amaran rocked the box office even in Telugu states. However, the makers of his upcoming action entertainer Madrasi are reportedly quoting a staggering ₹14 crore for the Telugu dubbing rights.
Exhibitors feel the price is unrealistic. “At best, it would work around ₹7 crore because Telugu audiences have become highly selective,” says a distributor, while dismissing comparisons with Amaran. “That was a patriotic biopic of a valiant soldier.
The stellar performances of Siva Karthikeyan and Sai Pallavi helped it gross ₹46 crore in Telugu states. But Madrasi is a commercial action film, which is a different ball game,” he explains.
The trailer of Madrasi—helmed by hitmaker A.R. Murugadoss (of Ghajini fame)—showcases a star-centric narrative revolving around illegal gun trade, packed with high-octane action and romance. Siva Karthikeyan appears ferocious and intense in a layered role, while heroine Rukmini Vasanth has a performance-oriented part beyond just glamour.
Industry insiders believe the makers may have been encouraged by the fact that Tamil stars like Rajinikanth, Vijay, Suriya, and Karthi command ₹25–₹50 crore for their dubbed films in Telugu.
