Teaser' that draws the crowd

Following in the footsteps of their Bollywood counterparts, Sandalwood producers are also resorting to new ways of promoting their films.

With stiff competition to attract more number of audiences, Sandalwood has been adapting to new methods as an act of building curiosity before movies hits the screen. After audio releases, poster and first looks exercises, the industry is hooked onto ‘teaser’ launches. Bengaluru Chronicle reports on these ‘teasing’ acts.

“Decades ago when a movie was being made, the audience would barely have an idea about it. At the most, they would learn through few limited media that so and so is acting in a film which is being directed by someone. It is only when the movie was scheduled to release, the posters of a movie would sightly reveal giving a hint of what audience could expect from it. Now, it’s a total different scenario. An audience or a fan would have more information about a project than the filmmakers themselves. Keeping secrets has become the biggest challenge these days,” says Santhosh, film director.

Hence, the filmmakers have adopted to new methods to tease the audience in a stage by stage manner. “When a big banner project is announced, first they tend to make use of the star components to give the initial boost. Then, the heroine is promoted, followed by the first look of the star cast. This way they keep the audience connected and the film to trend all the way till it is finally released. Once the production is over, then comes the audio release, revealing the songs along with some interesting making details,” he adds.

Even lyrical videos, motion posters, are among the few favourites to keep the film alive and kicking. “The number of films made in a year apart from numerous shows and programmes on television along with online contents tends to distract the present age audience from movies unless they are die hard fans of an actor or a director and would be eagerly waiting to watch their work. Teaser and trailer launches have become a norm these days for the film industry. It is again the use of social media platforms, the makers try and reach more audience,” says actor Avinash.

Whereas film critic Subramanya shares that such new acts are usually associated with big banner movies involving big stars. “Naturally, every other filmmaker would make an attempt to garner more publicity by replicating the same. However, unless there is genuine curiosity, one cannot simply build curiosity among audience. So, the makers better concentrate on innovative thinking in terms of delivering good and unique content which will automatically lead to success.

Recently, the new digital version of the all time classic film Nagarahavu film’s teaser was released by Kiccha Sudeep from Europe, where he is shooting for Kotigobba 3.

Director Prem, whose The Villain, is one of the most awaited film starring Shivarajkumar and Kiccha Sudeep, says that they have decided to showcase a teaser launch of the film to help film directors in desperate need of financial assistance to meet their medical expenses. “The teaser launch event which is scheduled on Thursday, will be used as a fundraiser by selling tickets for the event, which will be later handed over to film directors who are facing a financial crisis,” he wraps it up.
