From Kulavadhu to Nammane Yuvarani

The talented actress is looking at offbeat roles in films even as she gets ready to pursue a Phd.

For those who follow the popular Kannada teleserial Kulavadhu, the character Meera who is loquacious by nature and kind at heart, is portrayed by this multi-talented personality to great effect. Yet, in real life, she is the opposite to her on-screen character. A double gold medalist in MSc (in medical biochemistry), Ankita Amar is aspiring to pursue a PhD soon. Meanwhile, she is busy with her second tele-serial Nammane Yuvarani on Colors Kannada. In an interview with Bengaluru Chronicle Ankita spoke about her journey, future plans, versatile talent, and more.

“Though born in Mysuru, I have grown up in Bengaluru. My small screen entry was never planned. I was basically into dance and music, and was not sure of my acting skills, especially performing in front of a camera. But as a theatre artiste who has grown up seeing my parents (also theatre artists), I could not let go of this opportunity, and hence my journey began with Kulavadhu, and it continues with my latest project Nammane Yuvarani,” says Ankita Amar.

She goes on to add that she recently completed her MSc in medical biochemistry from JSS Medical College in Mysuru, and following that, she decided to take a break for a year to pursue other interests before getting into the thick of a PhD.

“My family is very important to me. Both my parents, Amarbabu and Asha Amarbabu, my younger sister Ananya are theatre artists. Watching them from an early age, and performing on stage led me into acting. I am also into light music, and am currently learning from Sunitha Chandrakumar who is my teacher, I also want to pursue it further,” she says.

Her tryst with acting was unplanned and she feels her experience acting in Kulavadhu, helped her a lot. “I learnt a lot, but the character I portray is opposite to my real life personality. While she is talkative and childish, I am far more serious and composed in reality. In fact, the character aided my performance in Nammane Yuvarani too. It is quite a challenging role for me,” she adds.

While acting will be her prime focus, she adds, “Pursuing my PhD is a goal but if I do get opportunities to work in movies, I would prefer to do offbeat movies that emphasise on performances rather than regular commercial ventures.”

Apart from academics, Ankita is also planning on taking up vidhwath in Bharatanatyam. “I have finished my junior in vocal classical and junior in Bharatanatyam apart from a voice culture class with Rajan Sir (from the legendary composer duo Rajan-Nagendra fame),” she signs off.
