This leading lady Iis a tramp

Sangeetha Bhat has everything going for her, with three upcoming Sandalwood releases and one Tamil film too. We catch up with the actress.

This pretty actress made her debut three years ago. And now, she is the cynosure of all eyes with her new film, aptly titled — Dayavittu Gamanisi (which in Kannada means, your attention please). This is just one of four films set to release this season, which also include a Kollywood project.

Sangeetha Bhat’s Kismat is shinning bright and the actress speaks to Bengaluru Chronicle about her films, running a theatre group called Tramps with is unique while nurturing and supporting budding talent, and more.

“Kismat is finally ready for release and it also marks the debut of actor Vijay Raghavendra as director. After that, I have Guru Prasad Sir’s Eradane Sala opposite Dhananjay, and then a multi-starrer experimental venture titled Dayavittu Gamanisi opposite Vashistha Simha in addition to the Tamil film Aarambame Attagasam which is also ready for release, in which I portray a poor female protagonist who tries her best to get all she desires in life through love,” says Sangeetha Bhat, adding, “These past three years have been wonderful, since my debut Preethi Geethi Ityaadi. I have worked in all the three languages — Kannada, Telugu and Tamil,” says the actress who feels that every industry is different.

“Working in Tamil and Kannada is pretty much the same while Tamil films have given me a good platform, which was initially missing in Kannada films. Now, even Kannada audiences are supporting offbeat and experimental films, which is great. Yet, due to the horror flick trend in Telugu, I could not get many performing roles,” Sangeetha explains.

She feels that the popularity of offbeat films shows a change in perception, with even the last shows witnessing housefulls thanks to a new set of film makers who are a breath of fresh air amidst big budget commercial projects.

“I embraced acting for its passion and never took up films just for the sake of money, though at times, I have compromised. I believe good work will lead to longevity for an actress, and money will eventually come. However, the shifty mindset in the industry towards actresses in offbeat films makes acceptance back into commercial ventures a risky affair. I want to be remembered as an actress and not just as a heroine,” she adds.

Her love for stage has blossomed with her association with a unique theatre group — Tramps, founded by her friend Sudarshan, a couple of years ago. “Tramps does stand-up comedy shows with a different approach from that of a traditional theatre group. Initially, we used several languages including English, and now we have separate Kannada shows. I always wanted to do something for budding artistes. Since I cannot produce a film launching these budding actors, I took up Tramps as I could use the group and the state to encourage new talent with utmost sincerity and our limited sources. Tramps has been performing on a regular basis during weekends,” adds Sangeetha.

Back to her films, the actress feels that Guru Prasad’s Eradane Sala and acting with Dhananjay has been a memorable experience. “Guruprasad Sir is my best buddy, and my best teacher whereas Dhananjay is an excellent actor. Vijay is awesome as a director as he himself is a great actor, and goes the extra mile to develop a comfort zone for artistes to improvise, and helps in portraying the role well. In Dayavittu Gamanisi, a multi-starrer, I have a small but effective role,” she signs off adding that she is always open to anything that thrills her.
