Cashing in on controversies

Titles that exploit real life drama are the new rage in the film industry as producers capitalise on this trend.

Controversies surrounding celebrities (especially those from the film industry) have always been the favourite subjects for filmmakers. While some make it official as biopics, many simply take other routes with a disclaimer as having no connection to any living or any dead person. The latest to rock the industry in a similar fashion is that of controversial phrases which have become a battlefield to clinch them as movie titles. Nikhil Yellidiyappa, has undoubtedly been one of the most popular phrases in the recent times which has been trending all over the state and even abroad. It turned into a rage on social media in the form of trolls, memes and parody videos. The battle for Mandya, between the actors — Mrs Sumalatha Ambareesh and Nikhil Kumaraswamy churned more with the entry of Rocking Star Yash and Challenging Star Darshan. They are all in demands for getting various names registered as titles. Apart from Nikhil Yellidiyappa, Jodettu (a pair of cows), Mandyada Hennu, Mandya Hennu and many more in demand. Even during the #MeToo period, many made attempts to make a movie titled Me Too. Bengaluru Chronicle reports.

“The actual process for a sensible filmmaker has always been to start with a story and then pen the script, finish the casting before thinking about a suitable title which justifies the subject. However, a certain section in the industry who are always interested in cashing in on controversies are least bothered with such a process. All they want is to encash controversies. They get a title similar to anything controversial without any proper plan. And, rightfully anything made with such weak intentions results in a debacle irrespective of the curiosity factor,” says director Raghava.

Recently, Ganesh, a producer has managed to get the title Yellidiyappa registered and has even announced the making of the film. He says that the movie is about the bond between a father and his son.

Recently, a JD(S) leader and minister C S Puttaraju, had reportedly expressed that he will make the movie titled Nikhil Yellidiyappa featuring none other the son of chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, Nikhil Kumaraswamy following which the producer has urged the film body to not to grant any such title which is similar to his with any prefixes attached to it.

The Nikhil Yellidiyappa phrase can be traced back to the Jaguar movie audio launch where Mr Kumaraswamy calls, asking his son on where he is — Nikhil Yellidiyappa, to which Nikhil says that he was right there amongst the commoners. It was later used extensively in memes and trolls had a great time tweeting about this.

Actor turned politician, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, too reacted saying that he takes it as a compliment while he is rightly in the middle of people, serving them to the best of his ability.

“That’s not all, many filmmakers are in queue to get other popular phrase during the general elections such as Jodettu, Mandyada Hennu and so on. It is just an act to seek attention and some even encash on it. Once the dust settles, everything goes back to being normal. Even during the peak of the ‘Metoo ‘phase, many did the same but nothing fruitful or sensible came out of it,” signs off producer Venkatesh.
