While Bengaluru attracts people from across the world with its beautiful weather and cosmopolitan approach, Kannada fans today sing the line “Huttidare kannada naadalli hutta beku” with pride and are a bit fixated about people learning the regional language.
Coming as a breath of fresh air for several Kannada fans is the crime thriller Kannad Gothilla crafted around this phrase and the Kannada language. The teaser, which was highly intriguing, saw one of Sandalwood’s busiest actresses - Hariprriya - in the role of a cop. Talking about the film, first-time director Mayuraa Raghavendra says, “The hero of the film is Kannada, the heroine of the film is Kannadathi Hariprriya. The story is a suspense thriller revolving around the language Kannada. The film also has Sudharani in a bold role, while Hariprriya has rocked the teaser as an investigative officer.”
Coincidentally, Hariprriya recently won the hearts of many with the open letter that she posted on Instagram after she was accused of commenting and posting only in English. In the heart-warming yet practical letter, she rationally explains why she replies in English. With reference to Kannad Gothilla, she says, “While I was wary of doing another woman-oriented role after D/O Parvathamma, Mayuraa’s script and screenplay convinced me to take this up. Every Kannadiga can relate to it. Our city is filled with migrants - some of them come here and learn the language, some of them don’t and then there are also people who know Kannada, but don’t speak it. I’d like to thank everyone who’s learnt our language - wherever you go, you need to respect the local culture.”
Eager fans are still looking forward to the hush-hush release date of the movie. Mayuraa jokes, “By blending bits of our city, language and some suspense, we’ve made Kannad Gothilla, but release date also gothilla!”
