Bengaluru: A request from KGF star Yash, popularly known as Rocking Star, to Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddiurappa got a nod in the state budget presented in the Assembly today.

At last week’s inaugural function of the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes), actor Yash had asked the chief minist to build a film studio in Bengaluru so that Kannada film-makers don’t have to go outside the state to shoot.

Now that proposal has been accepted. A Rs 500 crore budget has been allocated to build a Film City.

The government said it has identified the land for the Film City project. It will be a world class facility in terms of technology and modern infrastructure.

It will be set up in the public private partnership mode in Bengaluru.

It was the dream of former chief minister Siddaramaiah to set up the Film City in Mysuru, his hometown. In fact, he even went ahead and identified 100 acres of land at Himmavu village, which falls in his old constituency of Varuna, now represented by his son Yathindra.

But the plan was changed during HD Kumaraswamy government to Ramanagara and now it has moved to Bengaluru.

In his intervention at BIFFes, Yash had lamented that every production team from Kannada film industry is forced to go for other states in search of quality studios for film shoots.

“If we had a studio in Bengaluru with state-of-the-art facilities, our filmmakers have the potential to make movies that can get noticed on the global stage," he said.

The Kannada film industry has indeed grown in terms of film making. The number of films being produced in Kannada has grown by leaps and bounds with over 400 films released in 2019.

Bengaluru has become a hub for animation with movies such as The Lion King and Avatar being made in Bengaluru. So a Film City will be an added advantage for film-makers here.

But there were some skeptics who doubt that the Film city project will get going despite the allocation of funds in the budget today.

“We have seen many promises but nothing has been implemented, " one film-maker told Deccan Chronicle, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
