The rumour mill

Rumours, claims and gossip can make life living hell for an actress... we explore this constant scrutiny.

Becoming an actor is a dream for many. But it comes with its own brickbats — especially when false claims and rumours taint actresses. Controversies and undying gossip about actors might be a norm today, but most actresses bear the brunt of this in the industry.

Recently, Sandalwood was abuzz, with a particular ‘news’ involving actress Meghana Raj who had allegedly cheated a person. The news spread like wild fire, and it took her family, film personalities and the actress herself coming out and refuting it that made a difference.

A complete stranger to Meghana, someone (Janardhan) repeatedly complained to the police commissioner through e-mails that the actress had cheated him. He claimed that she was his wife, and even alleged that she had stolen documents pertaining to their marriage. Thankfully, for the actress, the police rejected the complaint as baseless with no evidence.

The relieved actress later tweeted: “It has been quite an eventful day. False allegations has been made by people/person whose existence is news to me. I thank Karnataka police, press and media and my fans who have stood by me through this. Such baseless and childish acts do not disturb me. The outcome of the investigation and the closure of the case is quite heartening and vindicates my stand.”

Reacting to the such ‘incidents,’ Sharmiela Mandre says, “It’s scary because there are so many strange people out there making false allegations. I feel that actresses are always targeted as they are in the limelight.”

The Kan Kanna Salige fame actress Sharmiela shares her own experience: “There was a time when someone had spread a rumour saying that I was married to a producer even before I joined the industry. The producer is more than 30 years older than me. I found it so hilarious as he was old enough to be my father. Of course, I took it with a pinch of salt.”

Another popular actress Parvathy Nair feels, “Nothing as bad has happened to me, thankfully. But yes, there are amusing incidents like when someone claims to be my boyfriend even though I barely know them. I think it’s common for all actresses. The funny thing is when people who don’t even know us claim to know us.”

There have been umpteen number of such stories, love link-ups that give actresses sleepless nights. But, most of them have learnt to take it good stride.
