Ram Gopal Varma Gets 3-Month Jail for Cheque Bounce

Ram Gopal Varma
A Mumbai court convicted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in a cheque bounce case, sentencing him to three months of simple imprisonment. The case, rooted in a financial dispute, has added legal challenges to Varma’s professional life.
The Andheri Magistrate Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday, concluding legal proceedings that had dragged on for seven years. Despite the prolonged case, Varma failed to appear for the hearing, prompting the Magistrate to issue a standing non-bailable warrant (NBW) for his arrest.
Varma was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with cheque dishonoured due to insufficient funds or exceeding the agreed amount. The court directed him to pay Rs 3.72 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months. Failure to comply will result in an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
The case dates back to 2018, when Shree, a company represented by Mahesh Chandra Mishra, filed a complaint against Varma's firm over a dishonored cheque.
Varma, acclaimed for films like Satya, Rangeela, Company, and Sarkar, has faced significant financial setbacks in recent years.
In June 2022, Varma was granted bail after submitting a personal recognizance bond and a cash security of Rs 5,000. The detailed judgment and the court's observations are yet to be released.
