Padayyapa Set to Re-release as Rajnikanth Marks 50 Years in Cinema

Superstar Rajinikanth announced the grand re-release of his iconic 1999 blockbuster Padayappa on 12 December 2025. The movie intends to celebrate his 50 golden years in cinema and his 75th birthday.
The re-release of Padayappa is not just a film returning to the big screen, but an year-long sentimental tribute to one of Indian cinema’s evergreen legends.
The movie has been digitally developed in 4K with upgraded sound quality, in order to give the long-time Padayappa fans and a new generation of viewers an amazing theatre experience as per today’s technical standards but also preserving the film’s original mass appeal. The film, directed by K. S. Ravikumar with music by A. R. Rahman, was a trendsetting blockbuster during its original release. It became one of Tamil cinema’s highest-grossing titles and set benchmarks in worldwide distribution.
This new run has been framed by Rajinikanth’s collaborators and family as a personal celebration, with his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth stating Padayappa a film that came straight from his heart. Promotional activities mark the movie as “The Return of Padayappa”, underlining the film’s status as an emotion and a legacy for fans for keeping the moments close to their hearts for 25 years.
Rajinikanth debuted into the cinema world with the movie Apoorva Raagangal in 1975. And gradually his cinematic career got flooded with many blockbuster movies such as Annamalai, Arunachalam, Annaatthe, Darbar, Kabali, Shivaji, Linga, and the list goes on. Adding to this occasion, Rajinikanth has also confirmed a sequel titled Neelambari: Padayappa 2 is in development. The new story aims to expand on the original’s antagonist Neelambari, played by Ramya Krishnan.
