NCPA Presents Equinox Quintet: An Evening of Some Fine Jazz

Bringing together some of the most versatile voices in India’s contemporary music circuit, the ensemble features Anurag Naidu on piano, Noah Cerejo on drums, Prayag Barooah on guitar and Mark Hartsuch on saxophone.

Bassist Shashank Das brings the Equinox Quintet to the National Centre for the Performing Arts, NCPA, for an evening of contemporary jazz shaped by improvisation, collaboration and evolving musical dialogue. Bringing together some of the most versatile voices in India’s contemporary music circuit, the ensemble features Anurag Naidu on piano, Noah Cerejo on drums, Prayag Barooah on guitar and Mark Hartsuch on saxophone.

Formed through long-standing musical collaborations within Mumbai’s jazz circuit, the ensemble reflects the distinct artistic journeys of its members. Das, who studied at institutions including Jazzcampus Basel and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, began shaping the idea for the group while presenting his original music in Europe. Alongside his work as a jazz bassist and composer, he has also recorded for productions including Bombay Begums and Made in Heaven, as well as campaigns for brands such as Sabyasachi.

Pianist Anurag Naidu brings together influences from Western classical music, jazz, bebop and contemporary fusion, shaped by his training in France and performances across noted jazz venues in Paris.

Guitarist Prayag Barooah’s practice spans jazz, funk, fusion and film music, while drummer Noah Cerejo draws from progressive rock, neo-soul, R&B and electronic music in his approach to rhythm and improvisation. Saxophonist Mark Hartsuch, who moved to Mumbai in 2021 after performing extensively across the United States, has collaborated with a range of Indian and international musicians while also contributing to film scores and live projects.

The concert features original compositions inspired by a range of musical traditions, from Brazilian rhythms and blues forms to Nordic jazz, Indian folk and Arab melodic influences.

Come and experience an evening of original jazz that brings together individual expression, ensemble interplay and contemporary improvisation in an intimate live setting.
