‘My dad’s stories of Jallianwala Bagh impacted me deeply’
Akshay Kumar wants King Charles and the British government to watch Kesari 2, which is about that fateful day during Colonial rule

“Jallianwala Bagh has a very special meaning for me,” says Akshay Kumar, who headlines Kesari 2, a Dharma Productions film on the horrific massacre that happened there in 1919. “My father was from Amritsar and my grandfather witnessed the massacre. He told my father those stories, and my father in turn often told me about the incident. Undoubtedly, it impacted me emotionally,” said the actor, adding, “When Karan [Johar] narrated the story of Kesari 2 to me, I decided on the spot to do it.”
Speaking at a press conference in connection with the film, Akshay Kumar said, “This film brings innumerable surprises. Recorded history often hides what truly matters. This film uncovers powerful moments. I want King Charles and the British government to watch the movie and understand the facts about the incident. I’m sure an apology will naturally follow.”
Talking about social media criticism of title choices for his socio-political films, like Padman, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Air Lift and Kesari 1 and 2, the actor said, “Koi bewakoof hoga jo aisi filmon ko criticise karega. Aap hi bolo, kya yeh social message nahi deti? Girls have started speaking about their periods openly. And the need to have toilets in every household has also been taken care of.”
Pressed to comment about Jaya Bachchan’s criticism, Akshay, who is known to steer clear of controversies, and also for his respect for his senior colleague, side-stepped, saying, “If she has said that, then she may be right.”
Commenting on the ‘A’ certificate given to the film by the Censor Board, Karan Johar told the media, “I respect the certification. The narrative is engaging. Let the people watch the film, and decide for themselves. The decision of the audience is important, as they are the kings. But if the movie is made tax-free, then nothing like it.”
Kesari Chapter 2 — Untold story of Jallianwala Bagh is a historical courtroom drama directed by Karan Sigh Tyagi. The plot is based on a book, ‘The case that Shook the Empire,’ centred around barrister C Shankaran Nair and a pivotal legal battle against the British rulers. R. Madhavan and Ananya Pandey are also part of the cast.
