About the struggler phase, almost every talent who has shed many a tear and sweat to gain a foothold in film industry, with no godfather to assist, has a story to tell. The frequently seen, knocking-at-the-gates moments got shifted to the social media message boxes though. Upon receiving persistent requests in his FB message box, Omar Lulu, director of Chunkzz, one day let his door open for two young musicians. There was something about these guys that made him think they are good. The duo penned, composed and sung the promo song. Omar’s assumption did not go wrong, the song topped the charts on YouTube for two days after its release in mid-May.

Jubair Muhammed, the singer/composer and Dinu Mohan, the lyricist, are on cloud nine at the unexpected success of the song. Their years-long journey had borne fruit with the Kilikal Vannilla...song. “I got acquainted with the director through Facebook. Since then, I sent him the songs I composed for certain short films and albums. He promised to consider me for his next project. After announcing Chunkzz, he wanted us to do a dummy version of a comic-feel-good song. That worked,” rewinds Jubair.

As for Dinu, he was a part-time poet who had many unseen works piling up in his notebooks, without being able to find a publisher. The love for writing made this diploma holder pursue a degree in Malayalam.

“I study language and had no idea on how mechanical engineering students are since the movie is on them. I talked to them first. Their thoughts and experiences helped me find the correct wordings for the song,” says Dinu, a final year Malayalam student at Fatima Mata National College in Kollam.

Dinu sent the first line for Jubair to compose, which he did in a jiffy and returned. The complete version was thoroughly edited by Omar before the final version was approved. In the presence of Omar, they did some pruning to the song in Thrissur and straightway proceeded for recording.

Jubair’s early composition for a Tamil movie had gone with the wind as the film got shelved. The Chunkzz promo song, with no huge star cast, has clocked close to four lakh views on YouTube. The song’s success has earned him many more projects. Together, they are tuning and composing for a debutant’s movie, Wonderful. Rest of the songs in Chunkzz are composed by Gopi Sunder.
