With her powerful voice, Usha Uthup performed to an audience from all age groups as she sang the classics as well as the latest tracks at Phoenix MarketCity on Saturday evening. Thousands of fans queued up to take in the magic of the many memorable songs she has composed and sung over the years. Her husky voice has brought her fame not only in Hindi songs in Bollywood but she is equally famous for singing hit regional songs in Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi.
Welcoming the audience in flawless Tamil, she surprised the audience by beginning with the title track from Skyfall, her sense of humour appreciated as she spoke about her date with James Bond and other actors from the film industry.
With her trademark oversized bindi and her Kancheepuram silk saree, Usha performed a mix of English and Bollywood songs. She mentioned this year is her 50th year in singing and she feels like her career has just begun. A different happiness showed on her face as she spoke about Madras being the place where she started her career.
She is a female singer who is also a percussionist and she played the Djembe with one hand to prove it. For her native Chennai, she sang her rendition of ‘Kolaveri Di’ and the crowd went wild. Her all-time hit, ‘Darling’ and her rendering of ‘Saare Jahan se Achcha’ touched a sentimental chord in the audience.
