A story of hip-hop, love and betrayal

Actor Neil Brown Jr talks about being part of the massive hit, Straight Outta Compton, his role on The Walking Dead series and more.

Straight Outta Compton was a splash hit when it released, not only spearheading several memes on the internet, but gathering a huge following as well. The story of the iconic hip-hip group, NWA, struck a chord with audiences worldwide because it depicted both how the group became legendary, as also how they disbanded. Neil Brown Jr, who plays DJ Yella in the movie, and is also known for his role in the series The Walking Dead, made a huge impression on fans across the world.

Could you tell us a bit about the story of Straight Outta Compton and your role?
Straight Outta Compton is the story of the rise and the fall of the rap group NWA in the 80s and 90s. I play one of the founding members, DJ Yella.

What made you hop on board the project?
I grew up with music and videos of the NWA and loving the group. When they called for auditions and gave me the offer, I jumped at the chance. I cried like a baby!

What should audiences look forward to from the film?
It's a fun movie about life, music, love, betrayal and laughter. It’s a good ride and I think, they will enjoy the music if they grew up with it. Even if they didn’t, the movie will introduce this music to anew group of people and will provide context for why NWA had the lyrics it had. It’s an exciting and fairly accurate portrayal of their life and how they became one of the world’s most dangerous groups.

What was your experience shooting with your co-stars?
It was great, we were a good family — just like brothers. We shared a lot of laughter and joked around a lot. Everyone was amazing. We put our heart into the project. I’m impressed by all of them.

Did you expect that the movie would be this successful?
I knew it was a great movie. I knew the fans would get a great kick out of it, but I didn’t know it would be so very successful. The money that the movie made was amazing, especially since it was made on a small budget. I was amazed by the splash that we made in the industry during the awards season. I know that I left the movie feeling great and it made me want to see it again. I expected other people to feel the same. And they did, a lot of fans saw it multiple times.

You were also a part of The Walking Dead —Will we see more of you on the show?
I filmed more than what we saw on the show. I cannot confirm nor deny anything. They have so much material and my character was an addition. He is still, in theory, alive. It’s a great show. Robert Kirman has done an amazing job in keeping people on their toes. I would keep watching the series.

What future projects can we look forward to from you?
I am currently filming Labyrinth with Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker and it’ll be out sometime this year. I have other true story-based movies also coming out. I’ve been very blessed — God has been kind to me.

(The movie airs today at 3 pm on Sony Le Plex HD)
