AKASA a name that rings the tune of her recent hit and an all girl pop anthem Naagin, get’s on a chat with us and here’s what she had to say.
Speaking about her hit song AKASA says, “Naagin has been striking for so many reasons. The video was all about girl power, and being comfortable in our sexuality. In the end, we just wanted to make a song that people would party to, and I hope we’ve achieved that.”
From making YouTube videos to participating in reality shows and now being part of the Bolly industry in her latest single Dil Na Jaaneya from the movie GoodNewwz starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. It’s all about being passionate about your job and not giving up.”
Speaking about her collaboration with the American singer-songwriter LAUV and the experience of singing for big stars in GoodNewwz, AKASA says, “This was like a dream come true! I have always been an ardent fan of Lauv and I met him for the first time in Mumbai when I interviewed him early this year. We ended up working on a song together with Rochak Kohli! Though I never imagined collaborating with Lauv, I always dreamed of working with Rochak just once and now I have got the chance and that too on such a beautiful, romantic number. Dil Na Jaaneya is such a sweet love song with heartfelt, magical lyrics by Gurpreet Saini, Ari Leff and Michael Pollack. It was an honour to lend my voice to it!”
Music runs in AKASA’s family her father is a well-known Punjabi singer Arvinder Singh and Brother Asa Singh is also big on YouTube. She shares, “Ever since I was a little girl, I knew that music was my calling. I used to make up my own songs and perform them in front of everyone! Though I love Bollywood playback singing, I will always want to work on my own independent songs, and star in the music videos – which Pop allows me to do.”
The famous international music trio Major Lazer recently played Naagin at one of their sets and here’s what AKASA had to say, “That was an amazing feeling! It was the middle of the night when people started tagging me in stories of the Major Lazer’s gig in Mauritius – I couldn’t believe they had used Naagin as a part of their set! I play Lean On as a part of my set all the time and Major Lazer playing my song as a part of their set is a fantastic feeling. Then Walshy Fire (from Major Lazer) sent me a personal message congratulating me on the song and it was just the cherry on the cake – I’ve been on a high ever since.”
