It is okay to be not sexy
The song got written a while ago — a funny piece as always. Sofia Ashraf wrote it making fun of herself and realised she wanted to make a video. Two weeks ago, she was at an all-girl party and every time they tried to take a groupfie, they found it looking uglier than before. Till someone said, ‘Bro, I can’t look sexy’. And Sofia said, ‘Hey I just wrote a song about it’.
It is a rap song again, but Sofia — Chennai-based Kannur Malayali known for her protest songs like Kodaikanal Won’t, is not singing against being sexy.
“I have a lot of sexy friends and I love it that they are good with makeup and can help with mine on a Friday night we are going out,” she says, minutes after releasing her song I can’t do sexy. “I grew up in surroundings where vanity was not given too much importance. In places where we really were comfortable in our own skin. Where you wore baggy T shirts and no makeup. So much so that now I find it impossible to try and look sexy. I can’t look sexy if I wanted to.”
She raps: Forget washboard abs, I got washboard breasts
Tube tops keep slipping off my chest
My ass is flatter than a Dosa
Got a bigger moustache than Ajit in Aasai
When she planned the video, she thought there should be a sexy girl and then her. So she approached her ‘hot friends’ but everyone would tell her they could relate more to her character. “So I realised it is not just me who feels this way. Lot of women feel like this way. This is their anthem. So we made the video with a lot of women.” She just wants to tell them all, it is ok to be not sexy— to laugh at yourself about it.
