A musical tribute to uppooppa
KOZHIKODE: The city sank into the melodious voice of Nimisha Salim as she unravelled the memories of Muhammad Sahir Baburaj through his songs. Nimisha, the great granddaughter of the music legend, sang his evergreen songs during a mehfil or the musical night at Jaya Auditorium on Tuesday evening which also witnessed the release of her two CDs. "The CDs contain my lifetime favourites. One has ten songs of my uppooppa using harmonium, tabla and guitar. The second consists of all my best-loved Hindi songs sung by legends," said Ms Nimisha.
It has been 38 years since Baburaj died, but his songs are engraved in the minds of Malayalis. His songs have always been close to Malabaris, which was evident from the massive response from the crowd during the event. "The love and affection my great grandfather received from Kozhikode make this city dearest to my family. There is a positive aura when I come to this place. It reminds me of my uppooppa and his presence. The songs sung today were impromptu. The twenty songs sung are the ones that struck my mind once I'm on stage," Nimisha added.
Although she has not met him in life, she has been living up his songs for more than eight years. Musicians Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and his brother Viswanathan Namboothiri, music director Gopi Sundar, film producer P.V. Gangadharan and actor Mamukkoya joined the music night to unveil the memories of their favourite musician.
