Fleet Foxes – Crack-Up:
The indie-folk outfit returns this week with their first album in a long time. The last Fleet Foxes record, Helplessness Blues came out in 2011. It featured some wonderful songwriting and lyrics, with the vocal harmonies on some of the songs really taking the cake. It’s been six years since the last record but the Fleet Foxes sound like they haven’t been gone for a single day. Their next album, Crack-Up promises to be an appropriate follow-up album, if not a departure from their earlier works.
Lorde – Melodrama:
Kiwi pop star Lorde returns with Melodrama. Lorde is probably one of the most successful crossover artistes in recent time, even winning a Grammy award at the age of 17. It’s interesting to see the path Lorde will choose for herself as she continues to grow and mature as an artiste. For her next album, Lorde takes on a more upbeat, dancier vibe, while still continuing to incorporate electronic music in her works.
Ride – Weather Diaries:
Ride makes their comeback this week with Weather Diaries. Before Brit pop happened, shoegaze was the first choice for the early 90’s indie kids. Along with My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, Ride was part of a shoegaze trifecta that fused guitar feedback and distortion, a lot of reverb and ethereal vocals to create some truly fascinating pop songs. Unfortunately, shoegaze was quickly killed off by the likes of Oasis and none of those three bands survived the 90’s. Each of those three bands has reunited though, with Ride being the most recent one to do so. It’s a good time to be a shoegaze fan.
Com Truise – Iteration:
Com Truise returns this week his brand of synth-heavy electronic music in the form of Iteration. Com Truise is not a typo, it’s the moniker under which electronic musician Seth Haley has been releasing music since 2010. Com Truise is a part of the growing popularity of synth-based music that almost sounds like its straight out of the 80’s. With his next release, Iteration, Com Truise continues with the same aesthetic while continuing to explore musically.
The Drums – Abysmal Thoughts:
The Drums return with Abysmal Thoughts, which is their first full-length album since 2014’s Encyclopedia. The Drums continue to explore their indie-pop sound while still maintaining the surf-rock sound that they have come to identify themselves with. Their song Blood Under My Belt is probably the best example of what we can expect from their next album.
