Under the guidance of a maestro

Having been associated with AR Rahman multiple times, Shashaa has immense respect for him.

Shashaa Tirupati has claim to being one of the most-coveted playback singers in the Tamil and Hindi film industries, in recent times. With a Kashmiri background, Shashaa sings with perfect diction and has songs like Naane Varugiren, Silluku Marame, Humma Humma, and many more to her credit.

Having been associated with AR Rahman multiple times, Shashaa has immense respect for him. “He gave me a break in my career and just the fact that Rahman sir believes in my ability means the world to me. He is perhaps the reason why I am into playback singing today. He is my favourite musician,” she reveals.

The singer is extremely happy to try out different genres of music. “Of course, I would love to work with other composers. In future, I would love to collaborate with Santosh Narayanan, Anirudh Ravichander, and Sean Roldan. Each of them approaches music differently,” she adds.

She has spent quality time with ARR, which other singers in the industry would love to do. Delving into the music maestro’s character, she asserts, “He appreciates goodness in any form. He encourages people and takes inspiration from smallest of the sources. He wasn’t insecure when he heard that we are recreating the popular Humma Humma song. When I was recording for Vaan from Kaatru Veliyidai, he said he liked the new version of the song and was genuinely happy.”

On her latest single Vaan from Kaatru Veliyidai, she explains, “When I first heard the song, I was in a state where I told myself not to cry. I sang with a heavy heart. I think this is the ultimate song that a singer can ever dream of. I am stumped for words seeing the composition and the sound arrangements.”
Though Shashaa has been offered several films, she is quite clear to stay from acting and concentrate more on singing.
