Rising star
Gone are the days when musicians had to work hard to get their music across to people. Social networking sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter have become a powerful tool for emerging musicians, with possibilities of becoming an overnight star.
This is exactly what happened to Saarika Devi, when she shared a link of her cover of Thodi Der from the upcoming movie Half Girlfriend on Twitter. Singer Shreya Ghoshal, who originally crooned the song along with Farhan Saeed, appreciated Saarika’s work by retweeting it.
The final year B.Com Professional student from Loyola Academy is over the moon. However, this is not the first time a famous musician has appreciated the 19-year-old.
The likes of Ankit Tiwari, and Armaan Malik, among others, have also shared her work in the past. “Armaan had shared my cover of Bol Do Na Zara from Azhar. I hadn’t even tagged him in the post, but he somehow heard it and shared it. Shreya Ghoshal is someone I’ve admired since a long time and when I got to know that she shared my music, I couldn’t believe it. It meant a lot to me,” says Saarika, a self-recording and self-taught musician.
Talking about when she began singing, she says, “I first sang when I was in Class IV. I began taking music more seriously in Class X. I perform at college and family get-togethers, apart from uploading songs online. I’m also a huge fan of Ed Sheeran.”
Her parents have always supported her. “My dad thinks I sing well. He and my mother were happy when I told them that Shreya had shared my music. I believe that if someone wants to do something, they should just do it. Parents should encourage their kids when they want to choose a different career path,” adds Saarika, who also grabbed an opportunity to work with Deloitte recently.
“There are no Hindi music reality shows in Hyderabad and auditions for shows like Indian Idol hardly happen in the city,” points out Saarika, and adds that upcoming musicians should be given more opportunities.
