There are those rare moments in life when destiny and luck intertwine. It will be one of those moments for Ranjin Raj when two films for which he has composed music will release on the same day. Those two films, Nithya Haritha Nayakan and Joseph, happen to be Ranjin’s baby steps in Mollywood as a music director. It is not like he is a novice to the world of music. The youngster has already earned his spot of fame by being the finalist of a reality show and has also lent his voice to a number of films in various languages.The excitement in Ranjin’s voice is palpable across the wires. And, why not? It is a rare honour for any music director to see two of his projects release on the same day.
“What is really great is that I have a total number of 10 songs in both these films. Moreover, both the films give importance to music,” he says. Incidentally, Ranjin has also composed the background score for Nithya Haritha Nayakan. Both the projects are as different as chalk and cheese as far as music is concerned. Nithya Haritha Nayakan is a feel-good comedy entertainer and the treatment given to the songs, too, reflects that sentiment.
Ranjin is happy about a coup that he has managed to work out. “After a long time, the audience can see M.G. Sreekumar and Sujatha singing together. They were the rage at one time who had churned out hit numbers consistently,” he informs. Another aspect that he is proud of is getting the lead actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan to sing the title song of the film. “I enjoyed working in this film because I was given time and space to work at my pace and in the way I deemed right! I faced no constraint as a newcomer and the director gave me complete freedom, which is why I was able to explore and experiment,” he says.
Joseph with Joju George in the lead was Ranjin’s second film and is directed by veteran M. Padmakmar. Ranjin considers it as a huge luck factor that worked in his favour so early in his career. “Joseph is an investigative thriller, but it has five melodious songs that travel through different time frames. Each song has a different genre. One is devotional, one a melody, one a romantic number and another one is a retro.” Here again, he could get the hero Joju to sing a song.
Ranjin, who has also made jingles, is aware of the challenges in working on films songs. “Speed is what works in ad films, but in films that does not work. One needs time to come up with a good product. In cinema, the advantage is that your name gets noticed.” Before signing off, he says, “I never compromise on my product, and that is the only way to move forward!”
