Making her own luck

Arya, a trained classical singer, realised that both her voice and interests suited western music more.

They say time changes everything. But Arya Dhayal believes that it’s up to us to bring about changes. The music video Try My Self is a comeback of sorts for the singer, who grabbed spotlight a few years ago when the poem Sakhavu recited by her went viral on social media platforms.

Arya, a trained classical singer, realised that both her voice and interests suited western music more. She always wanted to dive into the deep sea of music. When the opportunity for reciting Sakhavu came, she did complete justice to it, and it brought her praise and recognition. But the political controversies that followed shattered her confidence and created fear inside her.

Arya says, “It was awkward to have people stare at me and the comments made by the public were connected to politics. The whole incident made me keep myself in a shell that no one could break.”

Arya loves western songs; even though she knew she had the talent to compose songs, something dragged her behind. She made an attempt to write songs while she was an undergraduate student, which did not go well. She believes that self-satisfaction is very much important. After four years of hard work, while doing post-graduation in Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore, she successfully came up with an original song which had the right elements that suited her perceptions as well as her voice and style. And thus Try My Self happened.

“That one, too, didn’t go well at first as the song and the visuals didn’t go with the flow,” she adds. She wanted the visuals to be perfect for the song. Her cinematographer-cum-director Abhijith Kuttichira was also a beginner, but didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the music video because of his inexperience.

They figured out the mistakes together and finally released the video. The BGM, mixing and mastering were done by Abin Sagar, with whom Arya didn’t have any direct contact. They communicated, discussed and worked via phone calls. “During my college days in Coimbatore, my frustrations and a bad incident that occurred paved the way to Try My Self. It all happened when I released the bird caged inside me.”

Currently, Arya is working on her next song. She has started her journey to achieve the dream of being a pop singer, with the support of her parents. The story of Arya has just begun.
