Season’s flavour

Singer Deepak J.R’s Onam song Uthradaponkanavu is already a hit.

Malayalis are all set to celebrate their favourite festival, Onam. While Onakkodis (new clothes) and Onasadya (feast) are the highlight of the celebrations, Onam songs by various singers, too, are part and parcel of the festival. Onam songs become an instant hit among youngsters as they like grooving to the traditional tunes of these songs. This year, singer Deepak J.R’s song Uthradaponkanavu is gaining popularity. The song, written by Narayanan Kuthirummal, is part of the album that has 10 songs composed by Prasanth Sankar.

Deepak , who is in the early years of his playback singing career, considers it as a break. He says, “I have also sung other songs in the album. I have been friends with Prasanth and have sung other songs composed by him. It was through him that I got the chance. The best part, I would say, is that the album surprisingly had an Onam song and was recorded during this time. The entire team was impressed by the way things turned up and therefore, Narayanan and his wife Mini, who are also bankrolling the project, suggested that we make a music video for the song as well because it’s Onam season. They also wanted me to feature in the video. It is actually a fun song that recreates the memories associated with Onam and therefore the team wanted the visuals to go hand in hand. The music, colours, floral carpets and even the minute aspects of the video are symbolic to how the nature of celebrations has changed over the years.”

Deepak, who was a contestant of the popular singing reality show Star Singer, has sung in a couple of movies and also has a bunch of album songs to his credit. Last year, his single Nizhal Pole featuring Anjali Ameer was a super hit with more than 7 lakh views. The singer, who debuted in Mollywood with a song in the 2017 release Why, adds that he is looking forward to singing in movies more often. He will next sing for composer Ramesh Parameshwaran.
