Indi Graffiti has fast become one of the most talked-about bands in the city today. The band, known for their artistic expression and soulful tunes with the power of rock and roll, that was on a break for the past two years, is now in full swing and preparing to release their very first album soon. We talk to Bharat, Akshat, Akhilesh and Glenn about the band’s journey, future endeavours, and more…
The band, which was formed in 2007, only got its name later, in 2010. “We were keen to find a name that would express us and our music,” explains Bharat Rajagopalan, the lead guitarist and vocalist.
“Indi is short for Indian and independent, and Graffiti means a free form of art, which was similar to our music, which is Graffiti Rock,” continues Bharat about the band. All four members are IT professionals and strategically manage both avatars side by side! “The stage is an addiction for all of us,” pitches Akshat, the bassist.
“We discuss our schedules in depth and when we have an upcoming gig, the band comes first. If we commit to a gig, it gets 100 percent of our attention,” adds Bharat.
Not trying to be different is what the band tries to focus on the most. “Our competition is more within ourselves,” says Bharat seriously. “We compete with each other constructively and positively which helps bring out the best in our music. We like to stick very close to what drives us and connect with our passion for music, so the result is something that comes straight from our hearts. We are here to make music breatheable,” says the band, who are all pumped up after their comeback gig at Murphy’s Brewhouse on World Music Day.
“We believe that music is everywhere and we follow a genre that is influenced by everything,” says Akhilesh, the guitarist. It is an exciting time for the band, who are planning on touring in major cities across the country and have a number of gigs lined up in the city as well. “Graffiti Hindi Rock is a genre of our own making and our music spans across genres but is still rooted in the spirit of rock and roll,” the band closes off by revealing a little about their first ever album.
