Onam rocks
It is the third time they are doing this and every time it looks a curious little mix. Imagine Onam with all the traditions on one side and rock music on the other. But somehow they merge beautifully when it is time for Uthradachinthu in the capital city, where rock bands perform on an open-air stage for everyone on the streets, celebrating Onam.
Musician Rohith L.T., fondly called Chikku, is putting it together under the label of Dream Factory. “This is to give a space for indie music in Thiruvananthapuram. And when it is festive season, there will be more people out there, to take it to,” he says, running between the proverbial pillar and post, to make it happen. He has managed to bring six bands this time — Black Letters, All the Fat Children, Vidwan, Thakara, Aswekeepsearching, and a revamped Pathayam.
“Yes, Pathayam is coming back with a new line-up,” he says of the Malayalam rock band that had earlier disbanded. Chikku is the drummer for Pathayam, and another band, Dodo-Crew. With the six bands coming from Bengaluru, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, the music show will be multi-genre, multi-language.
All the Fat Children, the alternative rock band from Bengaluru, will come with their ‘Somebody Else’ and 'Dumb Dumb'. So will Thakara—from Bengaluru — with Malayalam songs including the famous Puttu Paattu. Vidwan will take a train from Kochi, again with Malayalam songs sung by Neha Nair and Anoop Mohandas. Black Letters will have lots of new songs to offer with their recent album Shapes on the Wall and EP Petrichor. Aswekeepsearching will come the farthest, from Gujarat, with their post-rock music. Pathayam from the home grounds will again have Malayalam lyrics.
Uthradachinthu will be held on September 5 – third Onam day – at the Manaveeyam grounds, beginning at 3 p.m.
