Music with a mission

The multi-genre band V-Bhaag' formed by 12 childhood friends is the new band on the block.

It’s raining bands and here is one more band that has come forward with a treasure trove of talents.

‘V-Bhaag’, a multi-genre band based in Thiruvananthapuram, is basking in the glory of performing on nearly 50 stages in just a year. The band is now all set to bring out their first album.

Band member Naveen S.G. says, “All the 12 of us are from Thiruvananthapuram.” The members are Ambadi P, Anoop P, Anand G.R., Rahul G. Sarma, Dhanya, Vamsi S. Nath, Prajith P, Harisankar, Abin S, Hareendranath M.A. and Shaheer. “The band performs with 11 instruments such as flute, violin, cajone and percussions.”

‘V-Bhaag’ was formed a year ago and was launched by actor-MP Suresh Gopi. “At the launch, he even sang ‘Ilaya Nila’ and ‘Pathinaalam Raavu’,” recalls Naveen.

Speaking more about the band, he says, “We have not restricted ourselves to any genre. We do unplugged covers, have our own compositions, a few mash-ups and have not shied away from performing the band’s version of bhajans.”

Sharing the story of its formation, Naveen says, “We were the official band partner of a noted FM radio here. Before that, all of us were childhood friends who were all in the same school and pretty much the same neighbourhood. The band was launched at an event held in connection with anti-drug abuse. From that day on, we made it a point to perform mostly at events connected to a social cause. We have been successful in doing it so far.”

On their upcoming single and other releases, he elaborates, “We have so far performed two of our own compositions. One — Venshankile has vocals and the other is a Qawwali with only instruments. A lot of people loved these two genres. As of now, we are working on bringing out one of the videos.”
