The musical Magic: Music we hear remotely controls our emotions

There will be many glum rainy days, the best way to beat them is to smile up at the dark clouds and hum a happy tune.

Music has the power to make us change our mood. We all have that one song that helps us get through a tough break up, as well as one that we can’t resist dancing to. The music we hear remotely controls our emotions, making us happy when we’re sad, energetic when we’re lazy and optimistic when things look bleak.

As you start working on those big ideas, you’ll have plenty of obstacles all along the way, and at many times a positive attitude is all that you need to cross them. Here are five songs that helped me through dark times, and continue to do so by bringing a smile to my face, and a spring to my step.

Bonnie Tyler - I Need a Hero
As entrepreneurs we have to believe that our markets are yearning for us. You’re its hero, its white knight, its ‘Street wise Hercules, to fight the rising odds’. The dreamer within us will recognise it as an anthem, calling us to action.

Gene Kelly - Singing in the Rain
There will be many glum rainy days, the best way to beat them is to smile up at the dark clouds and hum a happy tune.
Sometimes while working I catch myself grinning when I hear myself croon this charming tune from an equally charming movie. The words are easy, and the tune is adorably hummable. Try it.

Buddy Rich - Caravan
Have you watched Whiplash? A young drummer runs off the stage, in shame, towards his supportive father, who tells him that maybe it’s time to call it quits. At that moment, he goes back and gives an amazing drum solo to the song ‘’Caravan” as his father watches him with sheer awe and admiration through a narrow crack in the doorway. Buddy Rich was one of the best Jazz drummers in the world, don’t simply listen, feel the passion.

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In the Dark
‘You can’t start a fire without a spark’. This song is much more than a coming-of-age love song. A major reason why we chase our idea is because we want to escape a life of mediocrity and mundanity. The lyrics scream of all the things we can’t stand and the tune is so easy to dance to, that at late nights I catch myself playing the Air Guitar while singing it against a mirror.

Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You
We’re soldiers of fortune, dark horses looking to tear empires and build new ones. Conquerers don’t abide by social norms. Go ahead, enjoy that cheeky pop song you’re too shy to admit you love. This is currently my most played song, I switch it on, close my eyes and for three and a half glorious minutes, I don’t care about what the rest of the world thinks.
