Pottering with the riffs

This city-based band named after a Harry Potter spell, has been wooing audiences with tuneful renditions.

In a city filled with budding musicians, standing apart is quite a task. Making it seem like a cakewalk, Bengaluru-based Indie band Wingardiom Leviosa has walked into the city with all eyes on them! The acoustic band consisting of Trishna Shenai’s post modernistic vocal melodies and harmonies, and Jitesh (Jake) Jadwani’s grunge roots, creates an experimental aura that the city has been craving for. In conversation with the duo, we find out about their musical journey, and more…

Both Trishna and Jake hail from the small-town Hubli, where most musicians knew each other. “We emerged from different musical backgrounds – Jake from the post modernsitc and myself from Hindustani, and we often jammed together in Hubli. But since the scope is bigger in Bengaluru, we decided to make the jump and move here,” says 23-year-old Trishna about how the band was formed. Since then, we have performed at a number of venues including Bengaluru Brew Works, Eat Street, Beer Café and Monkey bar among others, and have shows lined up all through the month! Jake, the guitarist who also backs Trishna’s vocals, reveals that to make ends meet, the duo also have side jobs. “I have a studio where I do recording work and Trishna who has studied counselling works at a health centre in the city. Maybe when we make it big, we will be able to focus on music full time,” smiles the 25 year old guitarist.

To make the move from Hubli to Bengaluru, support from loved ones is important, which both of them seem to have received. “My mother is a trained vocalist so music was always encouraged. But both our parents were sceptical about the decision to move because they know how hard it is to make it big,” Trishna admits. “So we made sure we completed our education, just to give them some peace of mind,” Jake adds. Apart from their Indie tunes, their name is another thing that sets them apart. “We both love Harry Potter and Wingardium Leviosa is a levitation spell in the series. We thought it was a wonderful name because we want to do that with out music – levitate people. Also it’s a unique name that sets us apart, so it’s a win-win,” the lead vocalist adds. The duo also occasionally jam with Nachiket Kalburgi, their sessions drummer when their performances aren’t acoustic.

The duo will be performing at Bak Bak Bar on January 7.
