He entered the music industry about 10-12 years ago. And ever since, DJ Kave has managed to garner quite a reputation – of being one of the best turntablists in the country. He has performed with biggies in the interntional music industry like Rita Ora, Pharell Williams and more. Based in Chennai, DJ Kave was in Bengaluru performing at Foxtrot.
DJ Kave, who is self-taught, is also a sound engineer by qualification. Having done his schooling from Doha, Qatar; DJ Kave came back to India to do this course. He adds, “I was discovered at a club by a friend of the rapper Blaaze who had worked with A.R. Rahman. We met and we did a series of shows that were a huge success.” DJ Kave had the opportunity to work with Blaaze and A.R. Rahman once the latter won the Oscar. DJ Kave was featured in Hip Hop artist Hard Kaur’s album The Rising Mixtape, Volume 1. DJ Kave says that passion wise he was always into DJ-ing. He would voluntarily mann the decks for college parties too. He adds, “I used to play around with music with the software that I had. I have always learned by trial and error. I am lucky because I have always received the support I needed.” Kave is founder of a full-fledged DJ academy called The Skratchlab, which teaches people to become DJs within four months. For DJ Kave, music means energy and motivation. “Music for me is similar to our need for food and air to survive. Music also has the ability to lift spirits when we are low.” His music can be categorised into the hip-hop genre. Kave’s USP is that he is the fastest scratcher. Explaining to us what exactly scratching is, he says, “Scratching is an art where you move the record back and forth. By doing this, I am able to make melodic patterns. During my performance there is a point about 10 sec where I move the record very fast.” DJ Kave’s scratching is good that when he is introduced in the industry he is introduced as one of the fastest scratchers in the country. DJ Kave feels that there are two types DJs. One who plays for other DJs and the other plays with the motive to entertain people. He adds, “I consider myself more of a people pleaser. If I know that the guest is not enjoying the tracks I’m playing, I change but I still maintain my own style of Hip Hop.” Rapper Blaaze has become an icon for Kave and he is one person who Kave would like to collaborate with. He adds, “Blaazre is self-made who has immense knowledge and experience. He is also the person who taught me how to turn by turntablism and scratching into a performance.” He considers the city to be a second home and love performing in the city more than any other city. “The city’s scene is bustling with energy and people really know music. As an artist, that motivates me to work hard and come up with sets that are fresh and different,” he adds. DJ Kave has worked with a lot of International artist since he started. He is currently working on the production of a single which is untitled as of yet.
