Meesaya Murukku movie review: Worth a watch!

The movie is partially inspired from Aadhi's own life, the struggles he underwent to pursue his dreams as an independent musician

Cast: Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, Vivekh, Aathmika, Vigneshkanth, Vijayalakshmi

Direction: Hip Hop Adhi

'Meesaya Murukku' marks music composer Hip Hop Tamizha Aadhi’s debut stint as an actor as well as the director. The movie is partially inspired from his own life, the struggles he underwent to pursue his dreams as an independent musician with a mix of masala added to commercialize it.

Aadhithya (Adhi) is a happy go lucky guy from a middle class with doting parents (Vivekh and Vijayalakshmi) both of who are college professors and an aggressive younger brother (Ananth Ram) who always comes to the former’s rescue when in trouble. For Aadhi, music is his life. His father who gives him freedom and a motivating factor is a big inspiration for him. His best friend is Jeeva (Vigneshkanth). After finishing school education, both Aadhi and Jeeva join engineering colleges.

Incidentally, Nila (Aathimika) his sweetheart at school joins the same college. And it was love at first sight for Aadhi. She also reciprocates. After the usual ragging of newcomers, brawl with the seniors and few colorful events where he tries to exhibit his musical talents, Aadhi sort of settles down. But fate comes in the form of Nila’s affluent parents who are dead against their love affair.

Meanwhile, after completing graduation and taking due permission from his dad, Aadhi goes to Chennai to pursue his dream of making independent music. Whether he succeeds in his endeavor forms the rest narrated in a lighthearted and enjoyable manner.

As a director, it looks like Aadhi has aimed to make a film that entertains the younger crowd. The movie is full of life with internet celebs playing the supporting roles handpicked by him. There’s plenty of comedy, energetic and foot tapping music (a song bit in every ten minutes) and is largely devoid of any double meaning dialogues or obscenity.

Aadhi as an actor also scores as the film is part of his biography and he simply relives. The recent Jallikattu protest that had made him a known face also helps. Vivekh proves his versatility and aces it effectively. Aathmika, a known face on YouTube has given a decent performance. Vijayalakshmi also impresses. Vigneshkanth as his friend provides the necessary comic relief and Ananth Ram as Aadhi’s boxer brother does a neat job. So also Malavika.

On the downside, pace suffers in the first half as the story does not unfold until almost the interval segment.

Aadhi has also taken the onus of music composition and his tunes are good and he has smartly included two of his earlier hits - independent albums Club Le Mabbule and Vaadi Pulla in the track list. Although one may wonder if 'Meesaya Murukku' would go well with kids and seniors, the fun ride and relatable faces will definitely be lapped by youth audiences.
